On the 14 rd June 2010, the study “Employment Sustainability Strategies during Economic Crises, Good Business Practices” was launched in a public session in Lisbon, Palácio da Foz, Praça dos Restauradores.

The study’s presentation brought together representatives of the business world, international experts and government officials.

The event began with a speech by the President of the IAPMEI, Luis Filipe Costa, followed by the manager of the POAT FSE - European Social Fund Operational Program - Technical Assistance, Rosa Maria Simões.

Sonia Sousa, representing IPI Consulting Network Portugal and one of the study’s authors, presented the study’s conclusions.

Throughout the afternoon, case studies and best practices were shown by different guest speakers: Maria Adelaide Silva, the firm’s owner of Liberjóia, a jewellery retail chain; Catarina Figeiredo, CFO of Carfi, moulds and plastics enterprise; as well as Susan Bateson, Senior Vice President & Human Resources of HGS, an American biopharmaceutical company.

The final session was made by Stephen S. Fuller, the keynote speaker, Professor of Public Policy at the George Mason University, USA and President of IPI Consulting Network USA, presenting the paper “After the Crisis: What Jobs and Business?”.

The event closed with an open debate covering all the presentations.

The main goal of this study was to identify good business practices, in Portugal, aimed at sustaining employment in times of crisis and to make the comparisons possible with good international practices.
The analysis was based on case studies centred on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, from two sectors – moulds and plastics enterprises and traditional urban retailing. The moulds and plastics enterprises were mainly SMEs, situated in the municipality of Marinha Grande, and the traditional urban retailers mainly micro-enterprises, established in the city of Lisbon.
